Sometimes I shudder with fear at the thought of being buried in my grave all by myself. Other times I am totally at peace with the idea of the cessation of this life (Dunya as it is called in Arabic) and the commencement of the next, the hereafter (Akhira). I think of those dearest to my heart; I think of my husband and kids, of my Mom, Dad and brothers, of my best friends. The topic of death is one which we always generally avoid in private and in public, but why should it be? Is the idea of death always a strictly negative one?

You see, there is a positive aspect to remembering death. It makes you appreciate what you have here and now. When I think of today as my last day on this Earth, I immediately feel a deep sense of gratitude for all the beautiful people in my life. I thank Allah for all the numerous blessings He has bestowed upon me, for I am indeed blessed. I begin to see the small blessings as gifts from the Almighty and feel grateful for every tiny, single thing. When I reflect upon leaving this world for good, I intend on leaving behind a legacy for my offspring, something good to remember me for.

Actually, the Prophet of Islam (May Allah’s Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said “أَكثروا ذِكرَ هاذمِ اللَّذَّات يعني الموتَ” which translates as “Increase in remembrance of the severer of pleasures”, meaning death. He clearly orders us to remember death a lot as it serves to act as a benchmark for our deeds, good or bad. So when I know I am going to die, I will think twice before sinning, before I harm anyone, before I waste my finite time doing anything that displeases Allah. I will also know for a fact that my time here is quite brief so I would better use it doing great things and pleasing my Creator. If each and every one of us is mindful of death in this way, I believe we would be in a much better condition as a society.

There is also, however, the unhealthy fear of death. This usually comes from Shaytaan (Satan) who does not want any good for us. He would keep whispering and scaring you of death, so instead of you taking heed and taking action, you will just sit there, afraid to your core, doing nothing. This is not a positive fear of death. On the contrary, by submitting to Shaytaan’s whispers, you are allowing him to take hold of you and stop you from working towards your final abode (hereafter).

So for me, death is the inevitable end to every human being living on this Earth, it will happen to you and me, so I totally believe we should remember it often. This is the surest part of our future, so why try to escape it even if in thought?

I think about death often… yes, I do.
